The other name of this breed is Do-Khyi. It descended from the great dogs that were the source for all Molossuses and modern breeds of this group. The first evidence of these dogs dates back to the Stone Age.

Alexander the Great took these dogs to Europe and so new breeds developed in isolation in European countries. Only in the 1970’s, the foundation stock of this ancient breed was imported from India to the USA. Nowadays, this breed is rare even in its native land.
