Mastiffs - Things You Should Take Into Consideration

Mastiffs drool, especially during eating or when nervous. The owners have to carry a towel to dry the dog's lips.

Adult Mastiffs can eat up to a gallon of food every day. It's dangerous to overfeed them, especially puppies, because it can damage their skeletal structure.

Mastiffs shed very little, only in spring. The dog may appear light colored and spotted while the new coat is growing. Like most giant breeds Mastiffs don't live long. Their life span is 8-10 years. They finish growing at 1 year old, but continue to gain mass up to 3 years of age.

Mastiff males are much more aggressive and dominant than females. The female is better suited as a family pet; she is milder with children. Males are highly protective and fearless. They cannot get along with other males, but they are good with other pets if raised together.

Mastiffs are not the dogs for everyone; they must have a dominant master who is able to establish his dominance while the dog is young. Children should respect the dog and never tease him. It's vitally important to socialize Mastiffs from an early age.
